Cleveland Mountaineering Club - The Club Hut in Patterdale, Lake District

The Club Hut

The Agnes Spencer Memorial Hut is located at Grisedale Bridge in Patterdale in the English Lake District (map & Google Earth file).

The Agnes Spencer Memorial Hut, PatterdaleIt can be booked in advance ONLY by Clubs affiliated to the British Mountaineering Council and other organisations at the discretion of the Cleveland Mountaineering Club Committee.

It is ideally situated for climbing and walking in the Helvellyn massif and makes a good staging point on the coast - to - coast walk.

The fleshpots of Keswick and Ambleside are not too far away and there is good access by car to almost every corner of the Lake District. A few local shops provide basic food and booze. There are several pubs - try the Royal Hotel at Dockray, the Travellers Rest in Glenridding or the White Lion at Patterdale.

Hut Facilities

Hut facilities are excellent. Coal and electricity are included in the nightly charge. There are showers, good washing facilities, a drying room, "mattressenlager" style sleeping accommodation for approximately 22 (members and guests) and a well equipped kitchen with two electric cookers, a fridge, a freezer and a microwave oven.

There is a member's bedroom for the exclusive use of CMC members at any time. The hut is reserved for CMC members on the first and third weekends of every month. Bank holiday weekends are also reserved for members.

On some weekends the hut is open to members with young families, check with the Hut Bookings Secretary. Further guidance on the use of the Club Hut with children is available here.

The Club has reciprocal rights with the Chamois Mountaineering Club at their hut at Ceunant, near Llanberis in North Wales.

Car Parking at the Hut

There is parking adjacent to the hut for approximately eight cars adjacent to the Hut. As anywhere in the Lakes, parking is a sensitive matter and all hut users are asked strictly to follow the parking instructions issued with hut bookings and on display in the hut.

Overspill parking is no longer available along the Grisedale Lane as double yellow lines have now been put down prohibiting parking there all year round. If more than eight cars are taken to the Hut, which is about the maximum that can be parked in our area, then it will be necessary to hunt out the very limited spaces just before the Starkey Hut in Patterdale or using the Glenridding car park.

It may be possible to leave cars overnight in front of the Paterdale Church but be aware that there is a 2 hour limit on that site. So far no problems have arisen but I can see there could be difficulties on busy times such as New Year etc - therefore at such times I'd recommend making every effort to share transport.

Whatever happens please make sure there are no cars parked in the area behind the Hut that is reserved for Grisedale Lodge Bed and Breakfast. They seem to be very busy all year round now and its important we keep good working relations intact with them.
